Essential Job Duties
We are seeking up to 4 highly motivated seasonal Crew Leaders for a black bear genetic and abundance study in eastern North Carolina.

Primary duties include training, scheduling, and overseeing day-to-day activities of 3-9 seasonal field technicians; contacting landowners to request and maintain access to survey sites; setting up and monitoring hair snares to collect information on black bear genetics and abundance; data processing, entry, and organization; communicating effectively with crew and reporting to supervisors. Work will be conducted on public and private lands across eastern North Carolina. Shared field housing (utilities included) and work vehicles are provided. Specific duties include scheduling, landowner outreach, supply inventory, equipment maintenance, driving for long distances, operating ATVs and/or kayaks as needed, hiking with gear to sites that may be inaccessible from drivable roads, field data collection following detailed protocols, quality control, and performing tasks in typical southeastern summer conditions. Crew leaders will work closely with researchers at North Carolina State University, USGS North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Mississippi State University, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Crew Leader positions are mid-April to mid-August (~18-weeks) with some flexibility.

Shared field housing locations will be in southeastern NC (possible locations include Jacksonville, New Bern, Fayetteville, Elizabethtown).

  • Hours vary based on research needs- including mornings, evenings, and weekends

Minimum Experience/Education
  • 4 year degree in wildlife biology, zoology, environmental science or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of training and/or related experience
Department Required Skills
  • Ability to oversee field work, including landowner contact, management of supplies, field data collection, maintenance of hair snares, and organization of data
  • Ability to appropriately assess and mitigate risks inherent to field work, demonstrate safe practices to crew, manage technicians, and regularly communicate with crew for safety check-ins
  • Comfortable working independently in the field but also capable of working and communicating effectively with their assigned crew and supervisors to accomplish shared goals
  • Must be able to hike with up to 50 lbs. of gear to sites if needed and be able to work efficiently in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to work and communicate in a professional capacity while representing North Carolina State University on private, state, and federal lands
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work early mornings, late nights, and weekends
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Previous fieldwork experience
  • Experience leading or training technicians in the field
  • Comfortable operating and maintaining 4WD vehicles, towing trailers, operating and loading ATVs, and using kayaks/canoes on flat water
