About the Department
North Carolina State University is leading the charge as the recipient of a $39.4 million award from the Department of Defense to establish the regional Microelectronics Commons regional innovation hub, Commercial Leap Ahead for Wide Bandgap Semiconductors (). This initiative, part of the larger $238 million investment through the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act, aims to revolutionize the field of wide bandgap semiconductors.

Hub leadership, Distinguished Professors John Muth and Fred Kish, are dedicated to the "lab to fab" journey-translating laboratory advancements into fabrication capabilities for wide bandgap semiconductors. The hub brings together a dynamic partnership with N.C. State University and industry leaders, including MACOM, Coherent Corp., General Electric, Bluglass, Adroit Materials, and Kyma Technologies, Inc. This collaborative effort will propel the development of semiconductors crucial for national defense, electric vehicles, power grid technologies, 5G/6G, quantum technologies, and artificial intelligence applications.
Essential Job Duties
The Chief Technical Officer's key responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying, managing and completing all tasks necessary to establish the Hub at NC State, consistent with and as required by governing documents and applicable laws;
  • Hiring, organizing and managing the Hub's staff;
  • Establishing appropriate governance structures and processes to facilitate effective and fluid working relationships among all organizations participating in the Hub's activities;
  • Managing the Hub's day-to-day operations, leading the Hub's strategic planning and implementation efforts, and taking such other steps as are necessary to successfully carry out the Hub's mission;
  • Developing the Hub into the pre-eminent source of research, development and innovation in WBG semiconductors in collaboration with DOD and all Institute participating organizations.

In addition, this position will:
  • Provide technology leadership in wide bandgap (WBG) and ultra wide bandgap electronics and photonics in the United States to accelerate the commercialization of WBG semiconductors into applications.
  • Provide guidance regarding program development, research, engineering, and manufacturing technology for institute programs.
  • Develop Hub's technical roadmaps and promote the Hub's technical vision.
  • Support the development of new and continued projects' technical objectives.
  • Ensure the Hub activities are closely aligned with industry needs.
  • Ensure projects' technical progress is appropriately documented, and facilitate project evaluations according to their milestones.
  • Promote the Hub's capabilities and publishable findings to external audiences.
  • Coordinate the activities of the member universities and industry members.
  • Maintain close ties with practitioners around the world to bring the latest technology developments back to institute members.
  • Develop the Hub's overall technical and sustainment strategy.
  • Ensure all Hub research facilities are compliant with appropriate regulations and that NEPA requirements are met.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a doctor's degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience, or master's degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in research project management and program development.
  • Experience working in the semiconductor industry in relevant foundry environments.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams and to coordinate multiple complex interrelated activities.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Experience in presenting program updates and reports to stakeholders, executives, and team members.
  • Eligibility to obtain clearance upon request of the US government.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing teams on projects that have led to products
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Experience in novel government-university-industry collaborations.
  • Significant experience leading R&D activities in both manufacturing and academic research environments, especially involving efforts to improve the performance of semiconductors.
