Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
We are a diverse, collaborative group of researchers and practitioners who work together to build one of the leading schools of journalism and media in the country. The Hussman School of Journalism and Media offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs to students and working professionals. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 125 graduate students, in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty, staff, students and administrators work collaboratively to build and foster an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and accessible to people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and beliefs.

Public Relations and Advertising is the largest area of study in the Hussman School. The candidate will join a faculty where top professionals work in genuine harmony with a group of accomplished academic faculty. The combination has made UNC-Chapel Hill one of the top programs in the country in Public Relations and Advertising.
Position Summary
The Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is looking for an accomplished professional in public relations to join our faculty as a Professor of the Practice in Fall 2024. This is a fixed-term permanent faculty position. The competitive candidate will be a senior public relations industry expert who will directly aid students and support the University through teaching, academic & professional presentations, creative projects and/or research, mentoring, and service to the Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

The selected candidate will teach six (6) semester-long courses per academic year (3 in fall, 3 in spring) and will help to expand our course offerings as needed. Specifically, the successful candidate will contribute to the school's continued excellence in writing by teaching two introductory public relations writing classes each semester. The candidate also will teach one class per semester from the school's advertising-public relations curriculum, relevant to their area(s) of expertise. The successful candidate will serve on school and university committees, as well as take part in the ongoing activities of the school. Besides helping with the variety of service requirements to keep the school successfully moving forward, the candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduate and master's students and provide them with relevant professional networking opportunities.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in the same or closely related discipline as the courses taught. The priority for this position is a candidate with notable recognition and substantial professional experience in the areas mentioned above.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Master's degree or terminal degree in the same or closely related discipline as the courses taught, such as strategic communication, public relations, advertising, or marketing, is preferred. An earned degree may be substituted by relevant professional experience or by a combination of education and experience.

Because writing skills are critical to success in modern communications, the well-rounded professional will need to reinforce strong, core writing skills based on Associated Press Style and generally accepted journalism standards, as well as writing and creating content for digital and social media platforms to amplify messages and expand audiences.
