Position Overview

Essential Job Duties
Primary research focuses on developing methods to estimate Canada lynx abundance and distribution in Minnesota, USA using detection/non-detection data and genetic mark-recapture data. The position is located at North Carolina State University and involves a collaborative team including Dr. Nathan Hostetter (USGS NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit; NC State University), Megan Kosterman (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), and Dan Ryan (Superior National Forest).

The Postdoctoral Associate will:
  1. Quantify multi-year lynx occupancy using snow-tracking data from Superior National Forest (2014-2024).
  2. Develop methods to estimate abundance by integrating annual snow-tracking data and periodic genetic spatial capture-recapture data (2 years of SCR data).
  3. Work with collaborators to evaluate the future status of lynx in the region and monitoring efforts.
The postdoc will participate in all aspects of research activities, have opportunities to participate in occasional field research, and have the flexibility to explore their own research ideas.

Appointment is for one year, with renewal of an additional year based upon satisfactory performance and funding.

Requirements and Preferences

Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm
Department Required Skills
  • Ph.D. in fisheries, wildlife, statistics, quantitative ecology, or related fields.
  • Experience with hierarchical modeling in R with special emphasis on spatial capture-recapture and Bayesian methods.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary research group.
  • Commitment to maintaining an inclusive work environment.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Proficiency with hierarchical modeling and data integration either through existing software (JAGS/Nimble/Stan) or customizable methods.
  • Spatial modeling experience (e.g., spatial statistics, spatial capture-recapture, spatial occupancy)
  • Experience working with and managing large heterogeneous data sets.

Required License or Certification
  • A valid NC Driver's License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
  • A valid Driver's License must be maintained throughout employment.
