Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Department of Music at UNC-Chapel Hill offers a BMus and BA in Music and an MA and Ph.D. in Musicology for undergraduate and graduate students. Our educational mission is to teach music majors, provide general music courses for non-major students, and guide graduate students as researchers and teachers. We serve the public by presenting performances and academic lectures by students, faculty, and guest artists and scholars. We offer over one hundred concerts and recitals each year. We have a state-of-the-art auditorium which includes recording (audio and video) capabilities as well as lighting and sound systems. We have a total of 60 full- and part-time faculty who teach approximately 2500 students during the academic year and another 200 during Summer School. Through our teaching, research, and creative activities we share music's multiplicity of forms and meanings, connecting the study of music to the larger understanding of societies, and affirming music's importance as an expression of humanity. |
Position Summary | The Student Services Specialist position serves as an important liaison with undergraduate and graduate students, prospective students, faculty, and other staff members. The selected candidate will be responsible for a variety of undergraduate and graduate student services within the Department of Music. This position handles undergraduate student enrollment, degree progression, crediting and debiting student accounts, and inputting student scholarship award information. The position also handles hiring graduate Teaching and Research Assistants; disbursing graduate student scholarship awards; inputting tuition and fee information into the GradStar system, managing Graduate Student Health Insurance enrollment, providing guidance pertaining to enrollment, residency, leave of absences, and graduate school policies; and assisting the Director of Graduate Admissions with prospective student admission packages. In collaboration with the department's Associate Chairs and Facilities Administrator, this position also is responsible for all departmental registration and enrollment actions. These duties include setting up each semester's course schedule in ConnectCarolina, ensuring all classes have classroom space reserved in one of the three Department of Music facilities, and compiling enrollment data to assist department leadership in identifying registration trends and producing annual Student Learn Outcomes Reports. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | - Expertise and experience using Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel - Excellent written and verbal communication skills. - Ability to work independently and within a team. - Exemplary time management skills and must possess strong interpersonal skills. - Excellent organizational skills, the ability to multi-task as well as be flexible and adaptable. - Ability to manage time and meet critical deadlines. Must be able to follow through, complete tasks and resolve issues. - Ability to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. - Demonstrate the ability to work with confidential and sensitive information. - Must be able to exercise sound judgment and work independently. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | - Prior experience using ConnectCarolina, PeopleSoft, Online Syllabus Manager (OSM), Online Learning Contract Manager (OLCM), and Ad Astra or similar systems. - Knowledge of University policies, procedures, organizational structure, etc. related to student services. - Prior experience working with graduate and/or undergraduate students within an academic unit. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities | This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
