Position Summary

The Automation Manager will provide strategic guidance for automation and automation-related activities with support of day-to-day operations of the automation for the site along with people leadership.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for managing the team that deploys, operates, maintains, and supports onsite process automation systems, equipment and applications.
  • Responsible for leading and supporting onsite Automation Engineering team activities.
  • Lead site automation strategy, implementation, maintenance and support for the RTP site.
  • Ensure team has strategic personal and professional development goals and plans.
  • This position reports into the Engineering Management team at the site level.
  • Manage local team that covers site end-user support, ongoing management and upgrades and changes of, quality and manufacturing systems.
  • Lead complex, large and small mission-critical projects, site changes and strategies from inception through delivery. This includes major capital projects, change management, qualification and validation of GxP systems and adoption of the Resilience Digital Platform.
  • Develop and execute automation systems strategic plans for RTP site in Durham, NC.
  • Manage and partner with internal automation engineers, system service providers, contract resources and project execution resources.
  • Support the design, configuration, administration and maintenance activities of manufacturing computer and automation systems, including process control systems, manufacturing systems, and data historian.
  • Support site automation systems, including hardware/software design specification development, user / functional requirement development, integration, and validation in conjunction with IT Computer Systems Validation & QA Validation leads.
  • Support automation issue identification and resolution, including all compliance aspects such as Deviation investigation, Change Control, Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA).
  • Provide management of support for troubleshooting ongoing manufacturing operations, including managing and supporting on-call for after-hours remote support, 24x7 manufacturing cGMP operations
  • Support the development of technical standards, guidelines, and procedures in accordance with industry best practices.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of cGMPs and Good Engineering Practices (GEP), including ISA S88, Good Automated Manufacturing Practices (GAMP), ASTM E2500, ISPE guidance, etc.
  • Extensive experience working in FDA regulated pharmaceutical or biotechnology company.
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA packages, Historians, and PLCs


Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience leading technical teams
  • Decision Making: Utilizing effective process to make decisions.
  • Troubleshooting experience, both hardware and software, at a 24x7 manufacturing cGMP operation
  • Experience with Rockwell FactoryTalk View ME/SE, OSI PI, and Rockwell/Siemens PLCs

Our target base pay hiring range for this position is $110,000.00 - $147,500.00 per year. Actual base pay is dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to, the candidate's geographical location, relevant experience, qualifications, skills and knowledge.
